Asthma is a common condition that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The symptoms often occur at night or early in the morning. Asthma affects people of all ages, however, it most commonly starts in childhood. Asthma is in fact the most common chronic disease in children.
For most patients, asthma is a manageable condition. However, common medical approaches towards Asthma, centre around expensive inhalation based solutions, that relieve the symptoms of asthma attacks but fail to tackle the source of the irritants that cause these attacks.
Asthma triggers such as dust mites and fungal spores can be found in the bedroom and inside bed clothing and sleep surfaces. These triggers not only cause discomfort but impact quality of sleep and reduce energy and activity levels the day after.

Depending on the patient, asthma may be triggered by smoke, exercise, cold air, and other allergens such as pollen, pet dander and most commonly of all – the house dust mite. Management of the condition centers around avoiding those triggers.
The house dust mite (sometimes referred to as HDM) is a cosmopolitan guest in human habitation. Dust mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin and flourish in the stable environment of our homes. The dust mite's gut contains potent digestive enzymes (notably proteases) that persist in their feces and can induce allergic reactions such as wheezing. The mite's exoskeleton can also contribute to allergic reactions.
The common house dust mite is sized 400microns wide, barely visible to the naked eye. However, its enzymes, in the form of feces are evenly smaller and can penetrate the materials commonly used in everyday bedding products. No amount of washing or replacement, will fully eradicate these nasties.
Dust mites flourish in warm, humid environments, they love a warm, moist bed full of dead skin. Humans shed two to three pounds of skin a year. Depending on its age, your mattress may contain between 100,000 and 10,000,000 dust mites. Your pillow may weigh up to one third more after one year of use through retention of body moisture and dead skin cells. Dust mite populations increase rapidly; each egg-laying female can increase the population by 25 or 30 new mites per week. During its 80-day lifespan, the average dust mite produces about 1,000 allergenic waste particles. A half teaspoon of dust can contain as many as 1,000 dust mites and 250,000 allergenic waste particles.

Sinus condition refers to an inflammation of the sinuses, airspaces within the bones of the face. Sinusitis is most often due to an infection within these spaces.
The sinuses are connected with the nose. They are lined with the same kind of skin found elsewhere within the respiratory tract. This skin has tiny little hairs projecting from it, called cilia. The cilia beat constantly, to help move the mucus produced in the sinuses into the respiratory tract. The beating cilia sweeping the mucus along the respiratory tract helps to clear the respiratory tract of any debris, or any organisms which may be present.
When the lining of the sinuses is at all swollen, the swelling interferes with the normal flow of mucus. Trapped mucus can then fill the sinuses, causing an uncomfortable sensation of pressure and providing an excellent environment for the growth of infection-causing bacteria.

Sinus conditions commonly come from an infection, although swelling from allergies can mimic the symptoms of pressure, pain, and congestion; and allergies can set the stage for a bacterial infection. It is therefore important that our bedding is protected from the allergens, bugs and bacteria that give rise to Allergic response, and in turn to the onset of sinus congestion.
Bacteria are the most common cause of sinus infection. Streptococcus pneumoniae causes about 33% of all cases, while Haemophilus influenzae causes about 25% of all cases.
Acute sinusitis usually follows some type of upper respiratory tract infection or cold. Instead of ending, the cold seems to linger on, with constant or even worsening congestion. Drainage from the nose often changes from a clear color to a thicker, yellowish-green. There may be fever. Headache and pain over the affected sinuses may occur, as well as a feeling of pressure which may worsen when the patient bends over. There may be pain in the jaw or teeth.
Prevention involves the usual standards of good hygiene to cut down on the number of colds an individual catches. Avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke, identifying and treating allergies, and avoiding deep dives in swimming pools may help prevent sinus infections. During the winter, it is a good idea to use a humidifier. Dry nasal passages may crack, allowing bacteria to enter. When allergies are diagnosed, a number of nasal sprays are available to try to prevent inflammation within the nasal passageways, thus allowing the normal flow of mucus.

The common dust mite produces enzymes that are proven to contribute to asthma and allergy conditions. The dust mite is the lead offender in a party of bugs and bacteria that commonly share our bedding.
The effect on sleepers can range from feeling tired and irritable due to poor quality sleep, up to serious health difficulties in the case of allergic reaction.
